First long run- 15 miles

Sunday was my first real build up run in my big push here for Sept 22nd – the Fox Cities Marathon. After a day in Chicago Saturday for the Cubs / Brewers game- and a few beers and junk food- I was a little slow to get up and hit the pavement. Thankfully yesterday was not super warm so starting a little after 8 did not pose any issues. 70 degrees at the start and around 74/75 degrees on my home stretch.

I have been battling a lot of little things this year. Last year- not a single issue other than the typical soreness that comes as you build up your miles. Shin-splits, ankles, tight hamstrings, runners knees (OMG was climbing stairs tough), kidney infection, and overall just not feeling quite me has left my running this year feeling deflated and and wondering if I will be prepared for the Fox Cities.

I have yet to really feel like I have found my stride- that comfortable pace where everything just clicks.. Breathing, arms, legs… everything in sync for a comfortable and ‘easy’ run.

After maybe 1.5 miles there was a chalk board sign along the Oak Leaf trail- near some apartments across from Bert’s bar. I wish I would have stopped for a picture, but it was about how your day will go the direction of your smile or frown…up or down.

2 miles later is the golf course in Cudahy. This is always my quick stop for restrooms or more water.

It was after the golf course that I started to feel pretty good. Into the woods and Grant Park I went- all the way to the beach at Grant Park. Grant Park is a good 7.5 mile mark for me or 8 miles ish of you start at South Shore. A quick water refill and I walked back up the big hill – and onto the return trip. The return trip is where I finally found my stride. My mile splits are much better- tracking closer to 10 minute miles. Had I paused my watch for the pit stop I would have shaved another 5 to 10 minutes off my over all time (I walked the hill remember but that mile came in at 23 minutes!).

My feet were a little sore so I didn’t push to run 16. With the slow morning 15 seemed much better then possibly overdoing it with one more mile.

I am very pleased. Finally a good run, no muscle or joint issues, and my shins aren’t bothering me today. My hips are a little sore and tight but barre class tonight should help ease and recover.

Next week August 10 or 11 – the goal is 18 miles.

I will post my remaining training schedule later this week.

Cheers ya’ll!!

And remember to Just RUNt.
